We are hugely indebted to our brilliant website sponsors. Because of these fine folk, we can provide free content on here on a regular basis and hopefully mix this up with some interviews, reviews, one-off pieces etc....

We spoke to EMERYS about their business and plans for the future. Please support them if/where you can x

As an independent local Builders' and Timber Merchant we take pride in our business and our service and we are very proud to serve our customers in our surrounding local areas.

Our customers have always been our priority and we maintain a high level of service and commitment to all our customers by providing quality products, efficient delivery and by having experienced and knowledgeable members of staff.

With our team of experienced staff, there should be no product or service we either don't know of, or haven't already supplied!  We understand the industry and we can offer help and advice on the best use of construction materials.  We can also efficiently manage delivery and we give you trade discounts from major manufacturers and brands in the UK.  You want the best prices - well, we have a number of measures in place to deliver the best prices and service to our customers.  As we are part of the Joseph Parr Group this means we can obtain better prices and negotiate with larger manufacturers and brands.  So we can offer trade discounts to all our customers, including the general public!

Yet another way you can save money is by applying sustainable building as this lowers the running costs of your building.  If you decide to order materials from us you can expect to receive stock items usually within two working days.

Our friendly and fully licensed HGV drivers will deliver timber, building and landscaping materials directly to you and we have a fleet of heavy goods vehicles with HI-ab roadside delivery so we can place materials in a convenient place.

DUCK SPOKE TO JONATHAN GOODWIN ABOUT THE COMPANY.......

Tell us about the company and its journey so far......

Emerys Timber and Builders Merchants are an independent timber and builders merchants founded in Stoke on Trent in 1923. Originally sited in Copeland Street Stoke we moved to our current site in Garner Street, Cliffe Vale in the late 1950s to make way for construction of the A500. We also opened a new depot in Telford in 2011.

Does it have specific links to any of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, Stoke City FC?

No specific links at the moment. Only this mag lol, although we do sponsor Norton Cricket Club Stadium which is called the Emerys Stadium and I believe Stoke City Ladies train and play there!

Tell us about what makes the company unique or puts it ahead of its competitors

Being independent, we have the flexibility to do whatever is necessary to maintain and improve our customer service. All our staff have a wealth of experience and knowledge and are always willing to help. Satisfied customers will keep coming back.

What do you think is the key to running a successful business?

Listening to your customers, understanding their needs and reacting when change is necessary which promotes growth.

What's a normal week look like for the company?

We have a busy and thriving trade counter and yard and are open Monday to Friday 7.30am to 5pm and Saturday 8am to 12noon. Also delivering to our customers on our fleet of 7 crane lorries and 2 smaller pickups.

S-O-T is becoming a more creative city - agree?

Yes. Manufacturing output may have shrunk due to some of the larger producers closing down but Stoke on Trent is still renowned for its ceramics industry and it has had to adapt and grow in different ways over the years. Great to see a show like Great Pottery Throw Down bringing it to a wider audience and the investment taking place in and around Middleport Pottery but there is a lot more to Stoke on Trent than just ceramics, so hopefully people will become more interested in discovering other attractions our city has to offer.

Improve S-O-T in less than 50 words

Keep improving the city centres and regenerating surrounding areas and attracting new businesses to the area. Stoke on Trent was a heavy and dirty industrial city for such a long time and needs to keep improving and changing for the better.

How did/does Covid-19 affect the company?

We reacted really quickly to try and keep as many customers as we could working when it was permitted, as well as keeping all our staff safe and assured.  We changed the layout of our yard and offered a contact free, timed appointment collection service where orders were already prepared for customers, who were given a 30 minute time slot to collect and load their goods. We managed to offer 72 of these timed appointments every day as well as continuing to run a fleet of 7 vehicles delivering to sites and houses. Our website boomed over the first summer too, lots of people doing DIY and garden projects to such extent that it created national shortages of some everyday DIY products.

What plans do you have for the business in 2022?

We intend to make some big changes to our website and our online presence, and are actively seeking depots in other areas to link up with our existing Stoke and Telford branches and increase our coverage.
